The 2022 UK Athletics championships are in full swing and as the fans enjoy the various events taking place, the fastest runners in the UK have been crowned. Daryll Neita and Jeremiah Azu took the prestigious 100m crowns at the event, leaving the world behind at a blistering pace.

Jeremiah Azu pulled a fantastic performance out of the bag, beating the favourite and most likely to win Reece Prescod. He finished the race in a time of 9.90s, marginally wind assisted- becoming the first Welsh 100m UK champion for 53 years. “I had it on my lock screen on my phone since last year – 2022 British champion – and to stand here and say it I’m so grateful,” said Azu to bbc.com. “It’s just the beginning, I’m 21 and I’m looking to change sprinting in Britain forever.”

Daryll Neita on the other hand pulled out an entirely new surpirse in the 100m– taking a shock win over Dina Asher-Smith. With visible joy on her face, she clocked in at a time of 10.80s. “I’ve watched her do amazing things on the world stage and it’s been very inspiring but I’ve always known I can do it too,” Neita said. “This gives me a lot of confidence and I really believe there is no limit to me.

“I’m super happy. I’ve worked so hard for this. To finally get the gold just means so much.” Asher-Smith only began her season last month, but was still expected to win the title after taking the 200m gold at the World Championships in 2019. She was disappointed in her performance, saying “I’m annoyed because I’d rather win. I’m fuming because I don’t like losing but I said to her face that I’m very happy for her. She’s worked really hard and improved so much over the years.”
