French decathlon world champion Kevin Mayer is battling multiple injuries while heading to the 2022 European Championships in Munich. However, the world record holder is eager to add a new title to his collection.

The Argenteuil native Mayer, who recently clinched his second world title in Eugene, Oregon three weeks ago, has now turned his attention to securing a first European crown starting on Monday (15 August). The Frenchman also admitted that he’s mentally and physically struggling at the moment though.

I think mentally is the worst because I’m used to giving everything I have in great condition, like for a championship. And I gave it all to the championships.”

The 30-year-old Kevin wants to win a title that is not yet in his collection having won silver in 2014 in Zurich. On the other hand, the double world champion is also wary of the long-term consequences of his actions and doesn’t want to do anything that could potentially harm his future in the sport. This concern doubles with the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics on the horizon.

He added: “There is a fight between my brain and my body. There is a part that wants to have the gold and to represent France. I love championships and everything, but my body and my mental don’t match right now.

“You have to be careful because I want to make history, but there is the Olympic Games in two years at home. There is one championship next year. So I don’t want to finish the season with an injury.”
