“It is heartbreaking for the three other athletes”: Team GB stripped of Olympic Medals after doping scandal

Team GB

In recent unfortunate news, the British Olympic Association (BOA) announced that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ordered members of team GB to return their Olympic medals.

The news comes for the mens 4x100m relay team who took silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The CAS ruled that British sprinter Chijindu Ujah was found testing positive for a pair of banned substances. As a result, all four of the athletes have been stripped of their silver medals, along with Utah’s 100m sprint time being deleted.

“It is with real sadness that we have had to ask for the medals, certificates and pins back, especially for the three athletes who have been affected through no fault of their own,” BOA CEO Andy Anson said in a statement to cnn.com. However, all athletes have to be stripped of their titles, as this has been the case with all previous doping cases as well.

“It is heart-breaking for Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Zharnel Hughes, but especially for Richard Kilty, who only competed in one event in Tokyo. We have written to them all to ensure they know their individual status is not diminished in the eyes of everyone at the BOA,” said the statement.

Ujah also expressed his regret for the issue, blaming his positive test on a ‘contaminated substance’. Feeling a great amount of regret, Ujah has profusely apologised for the damage he caused. “I would like to apologise to my team mates, their families and support teams for the impact which this has had on them,” Ujah said.
