World Athletics announced the nominations of the ‘World Athlete of the Year’ on Monday. The winners of this coveted award in athletics will be tough to choose.

Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey had smashed the womens’ 5,000 meters world record in October last year. She is one of the nominees this year.

The 22 year old long distance runner shaved more than four seconds off the previous mark with an awe-striking time 14 min 06.62 seconds. She achieved this feat in a specially arranged race in the Spanish city of Valencia. The race featured flashing lights at the track perimeter to guide the athlete’s pace.
