Sinner has done nothing but enhance his reputation since the last few months, and that has reflected in the ATP Rankings where he has broken into the top 20. Since March this year, he has been in the Quarter-finals of two back to back ATP events. First was the ATP 250 event at Marseille, then the ATP 500 event at Dubai.

After that, he did one better by reaching the Finals of the ATP 1000 event in Miami. In the Finals he was beaten by his good friend Hubert Hurkacz. His last match was a defeat at the hands of Novak Djokovic in the round of thirty-two at the Monte Carlo Masters. After the match, Djokovic spoke very highly of Sinner, reminded everyone that he is only nineteen, and called him the ‘Future of Tennis’. Sinner had a bye in the first round of the competition, in the second he will face Egor Gerasimov of Belarus.

Gerasimov has been in terrible form this season. He has barely made it past the first or second round of the tournaments he has participated in. His best finish post the return of the tour has been reaching the Semi-final stage of the Montpellier Open. In his first round match, he beat veteran Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets, 7-5 6-1.

Sinner caught the attention of the tennis world when he reached the Quarter-final of the French Open. He lost that match to Rafael Nadal, but after that match Nadal invited him to practice with him in his tennis camp just before the Australian Open. In the French Open and the preceding Rome Masters, Sinner beat players like Stefanos Tsitsipas, David Goffin and Alexander Zverev.

Gerasimov has a terrible record on clay. In fact, before the victory over Tsonga, his 6-4, 6-0 victory over Guido Pella in the first round of the Cagliari Open early in April was his first ever main draw victory at the ATP level on clay.
