The WTA season finally came to an end and saw Elena Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to clinch her career’s first title at the season-ending championships. Now it’s time for the ATP Finals.
Eight players have qualified for the event and are divided into two groups: Group Jimmy Connors and Group Bjorn Borg. Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, and Lorenzo Musetti are from Group Jimmy Connors, while Group Bjorn Borg has Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Sinner will enter the tournament as the defending champion.
Last year, he defeated Fritz in straight sets in the final. The four-time Grand Slam champion was also the runner-up in 2023, losing the match to Novak Djokovic.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion is the tournament’s most successful player, winning it a record seven times. Following his Athens Open win yesterday, he withdrew from the ATP Finals. Musetti came in as a replacement.
Auger-Aliassime and Musetti were fighting for a spot. While Musetti signed up for the Hellenic Championship, the Canadian ace chose not to play the Metz Open. In the end, Djokovic’s withdrawal ensured their participation.
Alcaraz will be bidding to win the event for the first time. He was the semifinalist in 2023 and failed to progress to the last four last year. The Spaniard has clinched the most titles on the men’s tour this year- eight from 10 finals, which includes the Rotterdam Open, his career’s first indoor hardcourt title.
Before the ATP Finals, Alcaraz played the Paris Masters, but his campaign ended in complete disappointment as he suffered a three-set defeat at the hands of Cameron Norrie in the opening round. Since Sinner clinched the title by beating Auger-Aliassime, he gained 1,000 points, and thanks also to his Vienna Open final win over Zverev, Sinner dethroned Alcaraz from the top.
The year-end No.1 ranking is on the line as the player between Alcaraz and Sinner to win the ATP Finals will end the season as the top player. Alcaraz dethroned Sinner after winning the US Open, denying the Italian his second consecutive win in the New York Major.
ATP Finals 2025 schedule
The total prize pool is $15.5 million from which the undefeated winner will pocket $5,071,000. Last year, Sinner claimed $4,881,100 after remaining undefeated. The men’s year-end event kick-started on Sunday (November 9), while the final will be held on November 16.

Shelton and Musetti are playing the ATP Finals for the first time. The American has won one title and lost one final. After losing to Zverev in the Munich Open, Shelton clinched his career’s first Big Title at the Canadian Open.
This is the first time two Italian men, Sinner and Musetti, have qualified for the ATP Finals. Musetti played three finals, losing all. The 2024 Paris Olympic bronze medalist, in fact, has lost six consecutive finals since winning his career’s second title at the 2022 Tennis Napoli Cup.
Auger-Aliassime has won three titles this season. After winning the Adelaide International and the Open Sud de France, the Canadian ace lost the Dubai Tennis Championships. He then took home the European Open before losing the Paris Masters final to Sinner. The World No.1 has claimed five trophies from nine finals, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Fritz, the 2024 US Open finalist, won two titles (Stuttgart Open and Eastbourne International) and lost the Vienna Open final to Sinner. In Stuttgart, Fritz beat Zverev, who has so far claimed just the Munich Open. De Minaur won and lost one tournament. The Aussie suffered defeat at the hands of Alcaraz in the Rotterdam Open final and beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Citi Open final.
