Agut had a great start to the year 2021. He reached the final of events like the ATP 250 Montpellier Open and the Qatar Open. His transition to clay has been decent too. He reached the round of sixteen of the ATP 1000 event at Monte Carlo. At that stage he was beaten by an in-form Andrew Rublev. In the Barcelona Open that followed he was beaten in the round of sixteen by Jannik Sinner in two sets. Agut has lost to Sinner thrice in the last few months.

His first round opponent here is Italian Marco Cecchinato. Cecchinato recently beat two qualifiers to get into the main draw of the Monte Carlo Open. In the main draw, he lost in the round of thirty-two to David Goffin. His last tournament was the Estoril Open where he made it to the second round, but lost to Ugo Humbert.
