Stefanos Tsitsipas has started the clay court leg of the year with aplomb. In the two tournaments that he has participated in so far, he has won one and been a Finalist in the other. Tsitsipas defeated Andrey Rublev in the final of Monte Carlo to lift the ATP 1000 event. In the event that followed, the Barcelona Open, he came up against Rafael Nadal in the Final. Tsitsipas lost to Nadal in the finals, in straight sets 3-6 3-6.He had a bye in the first round of the Madrid Open, in the second round he will face Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Paire has been in terrible form this year, and has barely made it past the first one or two matches in any tournament. Also, some of the comments he has made off the court, about his colleagues, has earned him a bad reputation and made him slightly unpopular in the men’s locker room. In the first round here he beat Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4 7-5.
