Feliciano Lopez vs Carlos Alcaraz: Preview

Feliciano Lopez

Veteran Feliciano Lopez has had a abysmal 2021 season so far. Until Marbella, he had lost in the first round of every tournament he has played expect the Australian Open where he reached the third round.

In the first round at Marbella, he defeated Japanese Taro Daniel in straight sets 6-4,6-4. The 39-year old broke his first round jinx and dominated his opponent with his big forehands.

His opponent, Carlos Alcaraz is just 17-year old. The Spanish teen wild card earned his fifth match win of the year in the first round against Nikola Milojevic to set up a clash against Lopez, who turned pro in 1997 – six years before Alcaraz was born.

World No. 133 Alcaraz is now 5-5 on the season, which includes beating David Goffin in the Great Ocean Road Open second round in February. The Spaniard advanced to the Australian Open second round as a qualifier, becoming the youngest player to earn a Grand Slam match win since Thanasi Kokkinakis, also 17, at the 2014 event in Melbourne.

Feliciano Lopez vs Carlos Alcaraz: Prediction

Feliciano Lopez

There is an age gap of 22 years between the two players. One is way past his peak, while the other is rising his ranks through the field. At 17, Alcaraz has a dominating backhand and will rely on it against Lopez.

But Lopez will not be an easy nut to crack. Given his big match experience, he will fancy his chances against Alcaraz. Expect the match to go down the distance and Lopez coming out with a fighting win.

Prediction: Lopez to win in three sets.
