Medvedev had beaten Yen-Hsun Lu in the second round of Miami Open in straight sets. The score line of the match was 6-2, 6-2. The world number 2 was on an unbeaten run of 20 matches till the Australian Open final. He was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the final with the score line of  5-7, 2-6, 2-6. The Russian had also beaten the likes of Dominic Thiem, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the ATP World Tour Finals, 2020 which was held in November. He last played at ATP 250 event in Marseille where he was the last man standing. He had beaten Pierre-Hugues Herbert in 3 sets with the score line of  6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

Popyrin had beaten 30th seed, Reilly Opelka in the second round of the Miami Open with the score line of 6-4, 6-2. In the first round, the Australian had beaten the veteran, Feliciano Lopez with the score line of 6-4, 7-6. The rising star had won his first ATP title few weeks back at the ATP 250 event in Singapore. He had beaten the 4th seed, Alexander Bublik with the score line of 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 to clinch his maiden ATP title. In the Australian Open, the world number 86 managed to reach the second round by beating 13th seed, David Goffin in the first round. He will be looking to maintain his good run.
