However, he did manage to pull off one of the most unexpected outcomes possible in Vienna – being the first lucky loser to defeat Djokovic. His magnificent performances boosted him to a career-best world ranking of 32, and he will be heading to Paris with a huge confidence boost.
His opponent will be Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. The Russian-born player has a similar win-loss ratio as Sonego but has played more matches than the Italian. His performances in 2020 have been topsy-turvy at best, with many early-round exits. His best performance came before the pandemic break – a semifinals appearance at Marseille.
