ATP Vienna Open: Novak Djokovic suffers shock defeat against Lorenzo Sonego
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic suffered a shock 6-2, 6-1 defeat after an inspired performance by Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the quarter-finals of the 2020 ATP Vienna Open tournament. Djokovic was competing in Vienna for the first time since 2007 when he took home the title. As Djokovic already had four ATP titles this season he was expected to go all the way to the finals of the 2020 Erste Bank Open.
However, the Serb was stunned by an assured performance by the Italian. The icing on the cake for the latter was that he let Djokovic win just 3 games. The match incredibly lasted just 68 minutes.
Lorenzo Sonego comes up with dominant performance
All credit for Djokovic’s shock defeat was due to the dominance that Lorenzo Sonego displayed on the court. Sonego was dominant on both serves and was assured in dealing with Djokovic’s serve. Sonego saved the six break chances that Djokovic got and took half of the return points. He ended the match with 26 winners and just 12 unforced errors.
Novak looked a pale shadow of his usual self as he landed just seven winners and made 25 unforced errors. Sonego has now qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament where he will face Grigor Dimitrov or Dan Evans.
