The FIFA World Cup 2026 didn’t get off to a good start as the world, a portion of it anyway, landed on the North American soil to witness one of the biggest sports festivals in the world. The prestigious tournament has faced a lot of heat in a short time due to the alarming rise in prices and the logistical nightmares faced by players and fans alike.
Behind the glitz and glamor of the World Cup, there’s also the unspoken backdrop. The United States of America, one of the three hosts, was actively engaged in a war in Western Asia. Meanwhile, their president, Donald Trump, is one of the most polarizing figures both domestically and internationally. The Australian football fans, who have arrived in the USA for the Socceroos’ second game of the tournament, have made their enmity towards the 80-year-old premier known.
Ahead of Australia’s clash against the hosts in Lumen Field, Seattle, a horde of men clad in yellow called out Trump for the countless mentions in the controversial Epstein Files. The chants went like this: “Aussie boys are on a bender, Donald Trump is a s*x offender.”

The videos of the fans marching and chanting have taken over social media as several critics used their platforms to reshare the content as well. While there was no proof of the derisive chants at the Socceroos inaugural game against Turkiye, whether fans will debut them against the USMNT remains to be seen.
The USMNT leads Group D on account of a better goal difference. Both the United States of America and Australia won their inaugural games, defeating Paraguay and Turkiye respectively. Folarin Balogun scored twice in a 4-1 win over the ‘Los Guaranis’ for the USMNT. Patrick Beach produced a sensational clean sheet while Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe scored two bangers in a 2-0 shutout win for the men from Down Under.
GOP Senator Rick Scott made a bold free speech claim about the controversial Australian fan chant
Rick Scott (R-FL) recently addressed the chants made by the Australian fans who are in the country for the FIFA World Cup. In a media interaction with Scott, congressional reporter Pablo Manriquez asked the senator for his thoughts on the “fans who are showing up here and disparaging the president, calling him a s*x offender?”.

Scott, who’s a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, called out the fans for being disrespectful to the host country’s president. He claimed that the lack of freedom of speech in their own nation might be the reason behind those chants. Scott said:
Look, it’s great that we get to host the World Cup. Now I want America to win. Look, if you come to our country, you ought to be respectful of our president. Think about it, they probably can’t do it in their countries.
When Manriquez clarified that the chants were made by the Australians, the former Florida governor mumbled a meager, “yeah, yeah.”

Probably, he knows that the statement he made is very far from the truth. The Commonwealth of Australia is ranked 33rd in the RSF World Press Freedom Index, 34 places ahead of the United States of America. They are also much better with respect to freedom of expression, according to data from the V-Dem Freedom of Expression Index.
On a different note, he said that he planned to attend a few games, but he’s not sure if that will happen. However, his grandchildren are reportedly “all going.”
