Australian Open 2021 faces up to two-week delay, reveals Victorian Sports Minister Martin Pakula
Sofia Kenin, Novak Djokovic
Australian Open 2020 saw the likes of Dominic Thiem and Sofia Kenin rise up in the ranks. While the men’s singles title was claimed by the World No.1 Novak Djokovic, Kenin broke a few records by claiming the title at the age of 21.
It was a few weeks past this event that Covid-19 infected the majority of the nations. Moreover, it continues to entangle more. Citing the strict regulations in Australia and the utter demise this pandemic has brought on, Victorian Sports Minister Martin Pakula made some revelations regarding the next edition.
Pakula states the likely scenarios for the Australian Open 2021
Negotiations between Tennis Australia and the government are in progress. T.A are pushing to keep the starting date of the tournament as close to January 18th as possible, so as to maximize the summer ratings.
In an interview with 9 News, Pakula revealed, “reports suggest that it’s likely to be delayed by a week or two. But it’s not the only option. As you know, the French Open was delayed by many months and Wimbledon didn’t occur at all.”
He went on to state that while it will be ideal if the bubble at this tournament will allow international players to practice, the quarantine requirements set up by the public health department will be abided by at all costs.
“An extremely rigorous testing regime will apply to the players. Both before they leave the port that they come in from and when they arrive,” Pakula concluded.
