Australian Open 2021: “I was definitely nervous,” Jennifer Brady opens up about her defeat against Naomi Osaka
Jennifer Brady
Jennifer Brady made it to her first Grand Slam Finals in the Australian Open 2021. She faced off against World No.3, Naomi Osaka and was not able to get past her as she went on to win her 4th Grand Slam.
Brady first rose to prominence following her surprise run to the fourth round of the 2017 Australian Open as a qualifier, registering victories over Heather Watson and 14th seed Elena Vesnina.
She also reached the fourth round of that year’s US Open, defeating Barbora Strýcová and Monica Niculescu before falling to then-World No.1, Karolína Plíšková. Following struggles with injuries and an increased focus on doubles, including a semifinal showing at the 2019 Australian Open, Brady returned to prominence in singles in 2020, where she defeated Maria Sharapova, and recorded her first victory over World No.1 by defeating Ashleigh Barty at Brisbane, and defeated Elina Svitolina, Markéta Vondroušová, and Garbiñe Muguruza at Dubai.
She won her first WTA singles title at the Top Seed Open in Lexington, Kentucky, where she defeated Jil Teichmann in straight sets. She progressed to her first Grand Slam semifinal at the 2020 US Open, defeating former World No.1, Angelique Kerber, en route. Following her impressive US hardcourt swing, she reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 24. Her career-high doubles ranking of No.44 was reached in August 2019.
Jennifer Brady On Her Australian Open Finals
In the post-match interview, when asked about the match she said, “Not the way that I would have wanted it… hopefully there’s many more. I was definitely nervous. Towards the middle of the first set I started to get comfortable. I didn’t feel I played my best tennis out there, which is a little unfortunate.”
She then went on to say “I believe I belong at this level. Winning a Grand Slam is totally achieveable. It’s within reach.”
She also said “If you would have asked me maybe a year ago, I wouldn’t think its.. its possible… it would feel like going to Mars“
Brady is considered as an underdog as of now. However, she is surely bound to show up in the future at majors.
