Australian Open 2021: Nick Kyrgios outlasts Ugo Humbert in five-set thriller to set up third round clash with Dominic Thiem
Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and France’s Ugo Humbert played out a classic five-set thriller at the Australian Open 2021. In a match that swung like a pendulum, Kyrgios was at his typical quirky self as he huffed and puffed his way to a win. It was Humbert who drew first blood by winning the first set 7-5. Kyrgios came roaring back in the second to level things up before the Frenchman eased through the third set.
Kyrgios then had to face a nail-biting tie-breaker in the fourth set where he stayed alive by once again levelling matters. He was then aided by an early break in the final set which he sustained throughout and saw out Humbert to seal victory. Kyrgios struck a whopping 29 aces in the match while his opponent struck 26. In what was a match that was even in all respects, Kyrgios’ big-match experience just about edged it in his favor.
Kyrgios sets up blockbuster clash with Dominic Thiem
During the course of the second round encounter and after, fans reacted with awe at the thrills and spills that the match produced. After his first round win over Ferreira Silva which came in straight sets and with ease, it was evident that Humbert would be no pushover. However, the fight that the Frenchman put up was lauded unanimously by those that watched the match.
Kyrgios will now face Australian Open favorite Dominic Thiem in the third round in what could be a blockbuster clash.
