Australian Open 2021: Rafael Nadal moves to the quarterfinals after a straight-set victory against Fabio Fognini

Rafael Nadal took on Fabio Fognini in the fourth round of the Australian Open 2021. Fognini and Nadal had a head to head comparison of 4-12 with Nadal in the lead. Fognini was bound to trouble Nadal and he did just that. However, Nadal was able to fight through as he won by a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Rafael Nadal Defeats Fognini After a Tough Initial Fight
Nadal took the lead in the first set by winning the first game. He extended his lead by 3-0 thanks to Nadal’s volleys. However, Fognini was able to get a game back making it 3-1. After some rounds of phenomenal shots, the score stood at 4-2 with Nadal in the lead. Nadal then took the set with 6-3.
The second set started with Nadal taking the lead by winning the first game, Fognini was able to make it a tie at 2-2. Fognini was able to take a lead with 4-2 putting Rafa on his guard. Nadal was able to bring it to a tie of 4-4 through some clever placements. Nadal then took the lead with 5-4 and then proceeded to take the set with 6-4.
The third set started with Nadal taking the lead again. Which was brought to a tie by Fognini but it was not going to be enough. The pressure was forcing Fognini to make mistakes. He did his best to be able to overcome the two sets to nil deficit. But that seemed in vain as Nadal took a 4-1 lead and then went and took the set with 6-2.
In the post-match interview, When asked about his match Rafael Nadal said, that it is always worrying when you play great players like Fabio. He said that at times Fabio was better than him. On his next opponent, Nadal said both Matteo and Tsitsipas are both good players and will be a big challenge for him.
