The 2025 Australian Open commenced on Sunday (January 12) in Melbourne. First seed Jannik Sinner will start his campaign on Monday (January 13) against unseeded Nicolas Jarry.
The World No.1 will want to start the season on a high note and be eyeing to script history once again by winning the Australian Open on the trot. One of Jarry’s main goals will be to make the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

Jannik Sinner vs. Nicolas Jarry: Match Preview
Jannik Sinner, who finished the last season with a 73-6 win-loss record, chose not to play a tournament before the Australian Open, skipping both Brisbane International and ASB Classic, the two ATP 250 events. He instead participated in two exhibition events.
The Italian will play his first match on the tour on Monday since his victory in the summit clash of the ATP Finals last year. He defeated Taylor Fritz to become the winner for the first time in the year-end championship.
Nicolas Jarry had signed up for the Brisbane International and played both singles and doubles. In singles, the 29-year-old was defeated in the quarterfinals by eventual winner Jiri Lehecka, while in doubles, he and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard lost to the pair of Lehecka and Jakub Mensik in the semifinals.

Jannik Sinner will be entering the tournament as one of the heavy favorites, having won the title last year after a five-set battle against then-two-time Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev.
Jarry on the the other hand hasn’t yet reached the third round of the Australian Open. Last year, the Chilean was defeated in the first round by Flavio Cobolli. He advanced to the second round in 2023 where Ben Shelton defeated him in straight sets.
In spite of his mediocre result in the season’s first Major event, he has defeated Sinner. They met twice before with both players winning a match each. In their first match in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, in 2019, Jarry emerged as the winner. Sinner clinched the win in their last encounter in the second round of the 2024 China Open.
