The first major Grand Slam of the season will begin on 12 January at the Australian Open. The tournament will follow WTA and ATP 250 events played in Australia and New Zealand. This will be the 112th edition of the prestigious tournament and the 56th in the Open Era.

The tournament will run for two weeks and is slated to end on January 26th. 128 players, including 32 seeded players and eight wildcards, will compete in the first round. As is the standard of Grand Slam competitions, men’s players will play matches in best-of-five sets, while women’s players will continue with best-of-three.

Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka will be the defending champions in the men’s and women’s division, respectively. Novak Djokovic will be heading into the tournament not as World No.1 for the first time in two years. Same thing with Iga Swiatek, who is the WTA No.2.

Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios, who has missed out on the Melbourne Major competition for two straight years, will feature in this year’s edition. The Aussie’s last Grand Slam event was at the 2022 US Open. He returned to court at the Brisbane International after a long spell with injuries. Also, Karolina Muchova will compete at the event after missing last year’s proceedings.

Australian Open 2025 Draw

The Australian Open draws for men’s and women’s categories are out. With no major absence, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner are favorites to win the tournament’s men’s singles. Djokovic has a superb record in Melbourne, having won it 10 times. At the event, he seeks to become the first player to win 25 Grand Slams since the Open Era.

The 37-year-old will play Nishesh Basavareddy in the opening match. Djokovic is also in the same quarter with Alcaraz and likely o face the Spaniard in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Sinner is seeking to win the the tournament for the second consecutive time. He dominated the men’s circuit last year and will be hoping to continue with the form. The Italian will face Nicolas Jarry in the first round.

In the women’s division, Aryna Sabalenka aims to win the Australian Open singles title for the third time. The 26-year-old will face Sloane Stephens in the first round. She’s in the same quarter with Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic. World No.2 Iga Swiatek will take on Katerina Siniakova in the opening match.

Coco Gauff is the 3rd seed in the competition and one of the favorites to win the title. She had her best run last year by reaching the semifinals before losing to Sabalenka. She’s in excellent form having produced a superb performance at the WTA Finals and United Cup. The American will play Sofia Kenin in the first round.
