There have been several instances where the fathers of quarterbacks have caused unnecessary problems for themselves. Patrick Mahomes’ former MLB player father served jail time after being arrested for a DUI; Baker Mayfield filed a lawsuit against his father, accusing him of embezzling money from his son’s account. However, it’s hard to recall the last time a quarterback’s father fought with his own family in the middle of the road. Avery Johnson’s old man did.
College football returned on Saturday. The Iowa State Cyclones (22) took on the Kansas State Wildcats (17)—not in Ames or in the Missouri Valley—both sides traveled to Dublin, Ireland, for the week zero fixture.
The game ended in a close 24-21 win for the 2024 Big 12 Championship finalists. Even though the fixture created several discussion points, it’s what happened after the final whistle that has been making the rounds on the internet.
Two individuals wearing Kansas State gear were seen throwing punches at each other outside of the Aviva Stadium. Video from an onlooker captured the fistfight.
A bald older gentleman can be seen pinning a much younger (maybe mid-20s) male to the ground. They kept exchanging punches until they were separated from each other.

Later, Tim Fitzgerald, who covers the Wildcats on various platforms, confirmed the older man’s identity. It was indeed the father of the K-State quarterback, Avery Johnson, and the younger dude is believed to be Johnson’s older brother (unconfirmed).
There was a postgame confrontation at Aviva Stadium involving Mark Johnson, father of Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson, and another man believed to be Mr. Johnson’s eldest son. According to witnesses, the conflict turned physical. According to one source, no arrests were made stemming from this incident. There is reportedly video of the disagreement, and at least one eyewitness is tied to Kansas State athletics.

The reason behind the sudden family feud remains a mystery.
How did Avery Johnson perform in the season’s opener against the Cyclones?
Johnson is among the top returning quarterbacks in college football alongside Clemson’s Cade Klubnik, South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers, LSU’s Grant Nussmeier, Oklahoma’s John Mateer, and Texas’ Arch Manning.

The 20-year-old kicked off his junior year at K-State by throwing touchdowns against the Cyclones. He threw two touchdown passes to Jayce Brown and Jerand Bradley while rushing for one himself.

Johnson ended the game with 21 completions from 30 for 273 yards and 2 touchdowns (130.72 QBR and 70% pass completion). He added 21 yards on the ground on 8 carries for one score.
Unfortunately, Johnson couldn’t lead the Wildcats to an opening day victory. Iowa quarterback Rocco Becht passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score to open the Cyclones’ account for the season.
Both sides take the long flight back to the US for their week 2 fixtures. Iowa hosts South Dakota, while K-State welcomes South Dakota in Manhattan.
Johnson sat behind current Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard during his freshman season. He was named the starter after Howard transferred to Ohio State the following season.
The Kansas native was clinical in 2024. He completed 217 passes (58.3%) for 2712 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 picks, along with 113 carries for 605 yards (5.4 yards per carry) to score 7 touchdowns on the ground.
