Avinash Sable wrote his way into Indian record books as he set a national record in the men’s 3000 meters steeplechase event at the Federation Cup. Avinash clocked 8:20:20 seconds and broke his own national record of 8:21:37 that he had achieved at the final of the IAAF World Championships in 2019. The 26-year-old will only want to build on this and take this momentum into the Tokyo Olympic Games for which he has already qualified.

The cut-off time for the Tokyo Olympics were set at 8:22:00 and Avinash breached that in the IAFF World Championships final by finishing 0.63 seconds ahead of the cut-off. He had finished 13th in the race then. Now, he has gone and bettered the timing and that would hold him in very good stead in terms of confidence going into the all-important Olympic Games in July.

Today, there was another national record that was broken when Murali Sreeshankar did it in the long jump event as he jumped 8.26 meters. Just like the case with Avinash Sable, Sreeshankar also bettered his own record and qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Meanwhile, in the javelin event, Annu Rani rewrote her national record and threw 63.24 meters. However, she still fell short of the Olympic qualification mark of 64.00 meters.
