Arsenal have been dealt a massive blow in their Premier League title challenge, with skipper Martin Odegaard being ruled out for an extended period. Manager Mikel Arteta recently revealed that the Norwegian could be out for a while due to the ankle injury that he sustained during the international break.
Odegaard has been pivotal for the Gunners since making a move to North London from Real Madrid in 2021. In the past four seasons, he has led Arsenal from being an out-of-form side to reclaiming its lost glory. The 25-year-old has scored 35 goals and provided 23 assists in 125 matches for the club.
However, Martin Odegaard is set to be out of action for a while, due to an injury that he suffered while playing for Norway, against Austria, during the UEFA Nations League. He missed Arsenal’s North London derby win last weekend and is also expected to be out for the club’s UCL opener against Atalanta. Reports indicate that the midfielder could be out for the next two months, until November.
Speaking to reporters, Mikel Arteta confirmed the player’s absence for a lengthy spell, while not specifying a return date. He stated that scans on Odegaard’s injured leg showed ‘significant’ damages in one of the ligaments.
The scan showed some damage around the ligaments in the ankle so we are going to miss him. It's something quite significant so we are going to lose him for a while. Hopefully not months.Mikel Arteta said (via Sky Sports)

Despite losing one of his key players, Arteta emphasized that other players will help fill in during Odegaard’s absence. Moreover, in a major boost, Declan Rice and Riccardo Calafiori are expected to return to the squad ahead of their upcoming clash against title rivals Manchester City.
Gary Neville suggests one change in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal line-up, against Manchester City
With skipper Martin Odegaard out, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville suggested one change that Mikel Arteta should make in Arsenal’s starting XI against Manchester City. The Gunners are set to face the reigning champions on Sunday (September 22) in a clash of the title favorites.
Against Tottenham, Arteta’s side displayed how well they can perform even without their top players. However, to maintain their unbeaten start, Neville advised the manager to replace Jorginho with Declan Rice, who has returned from suspension. He also asked the club to allow Leandro Trossard to play as an attacking midfielder after a decent display against Spurs.
I think he [Rice] will come in just for Jorginho and then leave it as it is. I think Trossard did well in that role, the number 10, so I don’t think he’ll change that.Gary Neville said on his podcast (via The Mirror)
Arteta, who is not known to experiment much with the starting XI might, however, bring in Gabriel Jesus or Raheem Sterling against Man City, owing to the experience that they have in playing under Pep Guardiola.
