PV Sindhu is on-course to claim her second successive Olympic medal in Tokyo, as she stormed into the semifinals on Friday. The sixth seed was up against the Japanese fourth seed, Akane Yamaguchi whom she dispatched off in straight games to book a spot in the last four.
PV Sindhu won the match by a score line of 21-13, 22-20 to enter the medal rounds. The moment that captured everyone’s attention came after Sindhu’s win, when her coach celebrated the shuttler’s victory in style. PV Sindhu’s current coach is South Korean, Park Tae Sung who went down on to his knees, and let a huge roar out, after the Indian shuttler managed to win her semifinal match.
PV Sindhu’s decision to split with long term coach, Pullela Gopichand raised several eyebrows, however, going by her recent performances on the world stage, it seems that the Indian shuttler made the right decision.
PV Sindhu storms into the semifinals at Tokyo Olympics
PV Sindhu has been in dominant form so far, having won all four of her matches, without even dropping a single game. The 26-year-old won the first game in style, as she troubled Akane Yamaguchi with her accurate drop shots. However, it was more of a battle in the second game, as Sindhu squandered a six point lead, and faced two game points.
She will clash against the second seed and world number one, Tai Tzu-ying in the semifinals on Friday. The Chinese Taipei shuttler has a superior head to head record over her Indian counterpart, defeating her on 13 occasions out of the 18 times they have faced.
Fans were delighted with PV Sindhu’s victory against Yamaguchi, and took to Twitter to express their delight.
One must give enough credit to Sindhu’s coach, Park Tae Sung who has been making her work hard to win an Olympic gold medal this time. PV Sindhu’s fitness level have certainly gone up in the past few years, and she has been able to hold her nerves at crucial junctures of the game.
