Bajrang Punia hails from the Khudan village in Haryana’s Jhajjar district. Bajrang was born in 1994 to Balvan Singh Punia and Om Pyari Punia and is the youngest among 3 siblings. Punia grew up in rural India and came from a fairly poor family. Growing up, his family was not financially equipped for Bajrang to pursue traditional sports.

Punia was encouraged to take part in free sports like wrestling and kabaddi. At the young age of 7, Bajrang Punia was encouraged by his father to take up wrestling. Punia’s father was a wrestler as well, and started him at a local mud wrestling school.

After Punia started to get serious about wrestling, his family shifted to Sonepat in 2015, so that he could attend a regional centre of Sports Authority of India. He recently got married to wrestler Sangeeta Phogat in November 2020 in a closed ceremony in Haryana.

Bajrang Punia’s parents are very proud of his achievements, and will be his biggest supporters as he makes his way to the Tokyo Olympics in the hopes of winning a medal.
