Bajrang Punia Wins the Bronze Medal After an Incredible Performance at Tokyo Olympics

The last day of wrestling at Tokyo Olympics the men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling medal matches take place. India’s Bajrang Punia would be contesting for the bronze medal match after losing the semi finals bout against Haji Aliyev of Azerbaijan. He would be facing Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan in the bronze medal bout. Daulet had taken the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships, while Bajrang had taken bronze, and this would be a match to look out for.
The first period started off just as expected, both the wrestlers not giving anything away. Daulet got passivity after the first half of the first period saw no one make a move. Punia almost got pinned down by Daulet, but he held his defence well. Bajrang pushed the Kazakh out of bounds, and gained another point. Punia was leading 2-0 into what would be a fiery second bout.

Bajrang tried to almost took his opponent to the ground, but Niyazbekov held on tight as he defended well. It was a tight match as both started attack well. Punia took 2 points soon after, as he converted and defended himself. The Indian took 2 more points with just under a minute left on the clock. He did not stop there and got another two points with half a minute left on the clock. It was all over for the Kazakh, as Bajrang was leading 8-0.
The buzzer went off, and Punia took the bronze medal after a hard and strategically fought match. He became the second Indian to win a wrestling medal, after Ravi Kumar Dahiya took silver.
