In Short
  • Bam Adebayo scored 83 points in a game against the Washington Wizards, breaking Kobe Bryant's 81-point record.
  • His performance surpassed LeBron James' Miami Heat franchise scoring record, leaving the sporting world in shock.
  • Damian Lillard humorously claimed credit for Adebayo's success, attributing it to his training with WNBA star A'ja Wilson.

When basketball fans think of Bam Adebayo, some of them would say that the Miami Heat center is a good player, while others would say he could be better if he worked on his game.

In nine seasons in South Beach, he elevated himself to be one of the team’s better players, but his dwindling numbers left many believing the Kentucky alum was on the decline.

Even though Adebayo was a part of the Paris Olympics squad alongside LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, many felt he was just a glorified role player at best.

Then, once his relationship with WNBA superstar A’ja Wilson came to the fore, fans claimed he was nowhere close to the capabilities of the best women’s basketball player on the planet.

To top it off, Heat legend Dwyane Wade recently revealed that his former team lacked the energy to compete, which seemed to be a shot at Bam Adebayo and some of the team’s veterans.

Then came their home game against the Washington Wizards, and the 6’9″ star got off to a heater. After scoring 31 points in the first quarter, his team started to defer to him intentionally.

By the end of the third quarter, his box score showed 62 points, which meant he had surpassed LeBron James’ Miami Heat franchise scoring record. Then, late in the fourth quarter, the inevitable happened.

Scoring off his final two free throws, Bam Adebayo finished the game with 83 points. With that, he surpassed the late great Kobe Bryant‘s 81-point effort that stood until now as the second-highest scoring game in league history.

Bam Adebayo’s record-setting night leaves social media shocked

Towards the latter stages of the game, it was evident that Bam Adebayo was visibly exhausted. But even then, the Miami Heat coaching staff, his teammates, fans, and the rest of the world were egging him on to break Kobe Bryant’s record.

Sure, 36 of his 83 points came off free throws. But even then, basketball fans, fellow sporting superstars, and celebrities could not fathom what the New Jersey native just accomplished. Check out examples of those reactions below:

Die-hard Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant fans might fume at someone like Bam Adebayo surpassing the Mamba’s scoring feat. On top of that, purists might point to how easy it has become for anyone to score this much.

However, as per the reactions from the likes of LeBron James and others, a feat is a feat, and only those who have played know how difficult it is to do so.

Damian Lillard hilariously claims credit for Bam Adebayo’s record

When Bam Adebayo was going through his record-setting performance, the entire basketball world was keeping track. During this time, Chris Haynes decided to FaceTime Damian Lillard while on NBA TV’s halftime show to ask about the Heat center’s performance.

I taught that boy Bam everything he knows… He been training with A’ja. A’ja been putting that work in with him.

Damian Lillard replied

The injured point guard reiterated that Adebayo’s relationship with the WNBA’s scoring record holder, A’ja Wilson, has been helping him find his stride. Even though the Heat star’s season average does not reflect that, Lillard believes it probably spurred him to go for this record.
