- Bam Adebayo scored 83 points in a single NBA game, surpassing Kobe Bryant's record.
- Michael Jordan congratulated Adebayo with a brief message, highlighting his reserved nature.
- Adebayo downplayed bragging rights over his partner A'ja Wilson, emphasizing respect for her achievements.
When Edrice Femi ‘Bam’ Adebayo came into the league through the 14th overall pick the Miami Heat held in the 2017 Draft, almost every analyst and scout felt he was just another interior defense and rebounding expert.
A couple of years later, the Heat promoted the center to be the full-time starter alongside the incoming Jimmy Butler. Since then, the Kentucky alum has established himself as a core piece for the Miami Heat.
But after Butler left for the Golden State Warriors, Bam Adebayo has become the de facto best player in South Beach. Despite that, no one thought he was anything more than an average scorer.
That is why nobody could believe it when they saw the Nigerian-American scoring 83 points in an NBA basketball game. Surpassing the late great Kobe Bryant is a feat that no other basketball player has managed in the past two decades.
LeBron, Zo, all my teammates from the past. D-Wade, UD. Michael Jordan.
Bam Adebayo said
This was the 28-year-old’s response when Brian Windhorst asked him who all reached out to congratulate him after his epic feat.
As soon as Adebayo said His Airness’ name, it seemed as if a bolt of lightning struck the NBA Today studio, after which host Malika Andrews asked about the message he sent.
Just ‘Congratulations.’ Very short and sweet. If you know Mike, he’s not talking a lot.
Bad Adebayo replied
Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade were among the many that sent Bam Adebayo messages to congratulate him on his 83-pt game 🙌 pic.twitter.com/IXl7SnAVkc

This means that the six-time champion kept it as short as he possibly could without having to invoke what he is truly feeling about another player passing his late close friend’s record.
Bam Adebayo has faced heat for surpassing Kobe Bryant
If indeed Michael Jordan is salty about Bam Adebayo surpassing the late great Kobe Bryant in the single-game scoring record, he is not alone. A host of fans, particularly those of the Los Angeles Lakers, were irked by the fact that the Miami Heat center did it using 36 free throws.
That ain’t how Kobe did it!… At the end of the day, to be up 25 points, to clearly chasing numbers, that’s not how Kobe did it. To be honest with you, when we compare it, there has to be 3 on the list.
Stephen A. Smith said on his show
This rant means Smith joins the others who believe the Heat star’s performance was not good enough to get one over that of the late Los Angeles Lakers legend.
Stephen A Smith says Bam Adebayo 83 point game was impressive, but not how Kobe did it 😬

“Coach Erik Spoelstra who’s a great coach, didn’t look that great last night trying to facilitate Bam Adebayo getting the record, challenging calls, losing challenges just because they… pic.twitter.com/7r5y9vSBJ0
The ESPN analyst pointed out that Wilt Chamberlain, whose 100-point performance also had similar situations where he was being ‘helped’ to set the record, ranks below that of the Mamba.
However, since this widespread hate came to the fore, a lot of people have come to defend Bam Adebayo’s effort, suggesting that no matter how he got there, it still takes a lot of effort for anyone to do so.
Bam Adebayo does not want to flaunt bragging rights with A’ja Wilson
When Bam Adebayo was going through his motions of surpassing Kobe Bryant’s scoring record, he had his mother and girlfriend, A’ja Wilson, courtside.

After that monumental performance, the Miami Heat star brought the Las Vegas Aces superstar along with him to the press conference.
Since then, and after Wilson’s own comments about losing their household’s highest scoring bragging rights, NBA Today’s Malika Andrews had to ask Adebayo how he and his better half would manage at home.
I’m just honored to be in the same conversation as somebody like that… I don’t think there is anybody else that’s going to catch her. If you do, good luck… There is no bragging rights. For me, it’s just being able to, at some point, to tell people, ‘I did a little something in my career.’
Bam Adebayo replied
"I don't think there's anybody else that's gonna catch her. And if you do, good luck."@malika_andrews asked Bam Adebayo about bragging rights after his 83-point game… and he made sure to give A’ja Wilson her flowers 💐❤️ pic.twitter.com/7a2SXzVmHS

It seems the North Carolina native does not want to start a war of words in his house, knowing A’ja Wilson is on a different tier than himself, and could be one of the, if not the greatest, women’s basketball players by the time she is done with her career.
