Tush push returned to the headlines on Sunday. The Philadelphia Eagles successfully used the controversial move several times against the Kansas City Chiefs to secure their second win of the season.

After surviving the offseason scrutiny from the league council on the grounds of danger to players’ health, it was clear that the Eagles would frequently run the play to their advantage. Quarterback Jalen Hurts scored a crucial touchdown in the fourth quarter to tip the balance of the tie in the Eagles’ favor.

NFL fans noticed that Eagles linemen were moving on the line of scrimmage before the snap. Technically, the referee should have blown the whistle for illegal movement, but they didn’t.

On another occasion, the Eagles center Cam Jurgens lined up ahead of the ball, nearly rubbing shoulders with the Chiefs’ defense.

Frustrated fans call for a ban on the tush push

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones wasn’t in a good mood after the defeat. He directly called out the Eagles’ lineman for jumping the line in one play.

We think he jumped multiple times. An official didn’t see it, so it wasn’t called.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Get Up claimed that the Chiefs lost the game in March when the league decided to keep the tush push in football.

This game was lost in March. This game was lost when the NFL owners refused to ban the tush push from happening. It wasn’t lost yesterday… here might be a lot of games the Eagles play that were lost in March because this play is unstoppable. Not only the defense doesn’t know how to handle [the tush push], but not even the officials know how to handle it.

NFL Vice President of Officiating Dean Blandino, who is now a Fox rule analyst, said that tush push presents a lot of challenges for NFL officials.

I am done with the tush push, guys. It’s a hard play to officiate.

Fans, mostly from teams other than the Eagles, want to see the tush push removed quickly.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was asked whether he would make adjustments so that officials and opponents have enough field of vision to see any offside. Sirianni’s cautious answer did not include the offsides against the Chiefs, but he said that the offense has to be perfect.

I get how we can manipulate things and show things like that, but it was slowed down so much … But we understand that we have to be perfect on that play.

Nick Sirianni said (H/T: Pro Football Network)

For now, the Eagles possess complete freedom to employ the tush push as the most deadly weapon in football. And one can be sure that Hurts and Sirianni will run it against the Los Angeles Rams in week three.
