The former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter has been making headlines for all the unwanted reasons lately. Porter received a lifetime ban from the NBA after he was involved in a betting scandal. NBA’s examination into Porter uncovered that the 25-year-old let out important information to NBA bettors before a game, which led to him being charged with a Federal Felony.

As per ESPN, an NBA investigation discovered in April that Porter misled bettors about his health and subsequently faked sickness to exit at least one game, resulting in wins for everyone who gambled on him failing to meet expectations. Porter also wagered on NBA games where he did not play, including one against his own club, according to the league.

In addition to this, 4 men were involved in this betting scandal along with Porter. Ammar Awawdeh, Timothy McCormack, Mahmud Mollah, and Long Phi Pham were accused of attempting to profit from previous knowledge of the player’s plans to leave two games early. Also, Porter has a huge gambling addiction and has been taking treatment and cooperating with law enforcement.

On the contrary, Porter, who appeared in just 26 games last season (2022-23), averaged 3.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. Not only that, Porter went undrafted in 2019 and appeared in only 37 games for the Grizzlies and Raptors. With this decision made by the court, Porter’s NBA career is all but over.

Michael Porter Jr. once defended his brother, Jontay Porter regarding the betting scandal

Jontay Porter, a former NBA player has been charged with federal felony after being involved in a betting scandal, resulting in the NBA giving him a lifetime ban. In addition, Porter is also the brother of the Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. Notably, Porter Jr. once came to his brother’s defense when the allegations had just come out regarding Porter being involved in a betting probe.

Jontay loves the game of basketball..I've known my brother my whole life. I know what type of dude he is and I know he's excited to play basketball, and I highly doubt he would do anything to put that in jeopardy.

However, Porter Jr’s defense of his brother came to no avail as he was found guilty. On the contrary, Michael Porter Jr. and his Nuggets side were not at their best this 2023-24 NBA season. They were knocked out by the Minnesota Timberwolves in round 2 of the NBA Playoffs. In addition, with one Porter’s career coming to an end due to a betting probe, another Porter will be hoping that his side win the NBA title in the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season.
