In a surprising upset, the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights defeated the Purdue Boilermakers in the opening round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The triumph is particularly noteworthy because it is only the second occasion in tournament history that a 16th-seed has defeated a top-seed, and the enormous credit goes to FDU’s coach Tobin Anderson.
Despite the odds against them, Fairleigh Dickinson refused to back down and put on an impressive offensive display. All-American Zach Edey had a solid game individually but struggled to get much help from his teammates. Stanley Moore stepped up in the second half, scoring 19 points and leading the Knights to victory.
Purdue struggled to keep up offensively and couldn’t find a way to contain Fairleigh Dickinson’s hot shooting. Despite the loss, Purdue head coach Matt Painter remained optimistic about his team’s prospects.
For the Boilermakers, who were also beaten by No. 15 Saint Peter’s in the Sweet 16 and No. 13 North Texas in the first round the year prior, this defeat represents the depressing conclusion of a trying stretch. Nonetheless, Purdue fans are sure to remain loyal to their team and are already looking forward to a strong showing in next year’s tournament.
