Transgender women should be allowed to play women's basketball, says SC head coach Dawn Staley

Women’s basketball is currently enjoying an unprecedented peak in popularity, with the entire basketball world tuning in regularly to witness their success in a sport historically dominated by men. However, one of the most controversial topics in women’s sports today revolves around transgender women. South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley addressed this pressing issue during a recent discussion.

In the NCAA Championship pre-game press conference, Outkick reporter Dan Zaksheske asked Staley if she supports the notion of transgender women who are biologically male playing in women’s basketball. After a long pause and a lot of sips of water, Staley answered.

Damn you got me deep on me there. I'm under the opinion of, if you're a woman you should play. If you consider yourself a woman, and you wanna play sports or vice e versa, you should be able to play.
Dawn Staley said

The longtime head coach and former WNBA All-Star knew that this statement would be blown out of proportion. However, she confirmed that it was her stand.

Dawn Staley suggested that identifying as a woman is enough to be allowed to participate in women’s sports. This admission from the long-standing South Carolina head coach will surely bring the whole basketball world to talk about it.

The topic of transgender inclusion in women’s sports has taken the world by storm recently. Especially after the NCAA allowed transgender women to participate in swimming competitions. So far, however it has not had any impact on women’s basketball as of now.

Chandler Parsons calls out Dawn Staley for her approval

Many were quick to give their own stand on this topic as soon as the clipping of this interview hit the internet. Former NBA player Chandler Parsons gave a unique example for Dawn Staley to make his point. He wrote;

So if Zach Edey wants to be a women, he can play against you next season?

This question could make Coach Staley rethink her point. Parsons wants the longtime coach to rethink how the inclusion of transgender women will impact the sport.

The NCAA has yet to allow transgender women to take part in all women’s sports under its purview. The experiment with swimming has already seen former athletes threaten to sue the NCAA over their decisions. Former women sporting greats have also protested the decision to allow transgender women.

It will not be long before the governing body will have to make decisions regarding other sports as well. As of now, they have Dawn Staley’s approval. However, they will need approval from all stakeholders to go ahead with the inclusion.
