After his team was denied a penalty in Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Atalanta, Roma coach Jose Mourinho urged his players to dive to get more opportunities at the spot-kick.

Following a collision between Atalanta’s Caleb Okoli and Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo, referee Daniele Chiffi refused to award a penalty, and Jose Mourinho was dismissed for his disobedience. Giorgio Scalvini’s goal in the 35th minute went unanswered by Roma, and Mourinho claimed later that Roma may have had greater luck if Zaniolo hadn’t attempted to stay upright.

“So therefore I have to change my advice to my players, I have to tell them don’t try to stay on your feet, don’t play the ball, be a clown the way many who dive like they’re in a swimming pool do in this league, because that is evidently how you get penalties.” Jose Mourinho stated.

With four points separating them from Serie A leaders Napoli going into the most recent international break, Roma’s loss against Atalanta has dropped them to sixth place overall.

With 13 points after their first seven games and a loss at the Stadio Olimpico, Roma is now sixth in the Serie A standings. Paulo Dybala injured himself during the warm-up, and Mourinho claimed his team missed the Argentinean international’s incisive play.

“It went badly because we lost a game that we should’ve won easily, considering the way we played,” Mourinho said.

“If we can imagine this domination we had in the final third, with many chances created, we can speculate that with Paulo on the field it might’ve been different.”

Mourinho’s team has made significant acquisitions to build an outstanding roster, thus big things are expected of them. The injury to on-loan midfielder Gini Wijnaldum would not have boosted their chances even though Dybala was a high-profile free agent acquisition from Juventus.

Last season, Roma won the Europa Conference League, their first major European award and trophy in 14 years. The 59-year-old, who is regarded as one of the best tacticians, has frequently made headlines for his antics throughout his illustrious coaching career with various top European clubs.

In February of this year, after his team’s 2-2 draw with Verona, he received a two-match suspension for another outburst. Then, after noticing the “threatening” behaviour, Serie A punished the man 20,000 euros.
