The Chicago Bears have added kicker Jake Moody to their practice squad, giving the former San Francisco 49er a new home. The 25-year-old Moody was waived by the San Francisco 49ers only a few days ago following a disastrous start to the season.
The 49ers selected him in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft after an outstanding collegiate career at Michigan, where he twice earned Big Ten Kicker of the Year honors, won the prestigious Lou Groza Award in 2021, and garnered first-team All-American recognition. Moody, who was known for his powerful leg and remarkable accuracy in college, initially carried that reputation into his rookie year.
However, his trajectory dipped in 2024. A high ankle sprain appeared to affect both range and accuracy. Before the injury, Moody converted 13 of 14 field goals and two of three attempts from 50 yards or longer.
Afterward, his numbers slipped to 11 of 20 overall and just two of six from beyond 50 yards. The struggles persisted into the start of the 2025 season when he missed two field goals, one short and one blocked, against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, prompting the 49ers to release him.
The Bears have also faced trouble when it comes to kickers. Cairo Santos, the veteran kicker for the Bears, stumbled in the first game during a loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Santos remains the starter and has been dependable inside 50 yards, but questions linger about his leg strength on kickoffs and long-range field goals. The addition of Moody is in the hope that the 2023 NFL draftee will be their long-term answer, especially if Santos experiences a prolonged slump or injury. The decision, however, hasn’t won the hearts of the fans.
Chicago Bears’ fans are frustrated with the organization with Jake Moody decision
The aftermath of Jake Moody’s waiver from the San Francisco 49ers saw the Niners’ nation praising while chiding them for making the decision this late. Considering the unification of these social media responders further cemented the idea that Moody is not the player a fan wants to kick the ball for points.

The Bears fans have called the team unserious, among other colorful names, in the wake of their decision. The fans have also highlighted the inadequacies of Ryan Poles, their GM, through subtle shades and jabs at him. The fans have also brought up an unserious competition mentality between Moody and Santos for the position.

Although a very small number of fans pointed to kickers going hot and cold during different stints of their careers, the Bears are frustrated beyond a certain point to see that. They have endured a prolonged stretch of underachievement in the NFL, marked by inconsistent quarterback play, frequent coaching changes, and an inability to sustain winning seasons.
Their last Super Bowl appearance is closing in on almost two decades, while their last playoff win came in 2011. That’s a long time without any semblance of hope.
