In Short
  • Belinda Bencic lost to Linda Noskova, resulting in Switzerland's elimination from the Billie Jean King Cup.
  • Bencic expressed disappointment after squandering match points during the match.
  • Switzerland lost the tie 3-2 after Viktorija Golubic also lost her match against Marie Bouzkova.

Belinda Bencic was not at all satisfied with the way she performed when she was up against Linda Noskova in the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers. The Swiss ace suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(9) upset at the hands of the Czech ace at the Swiss Tennis Arena, Biel, Switzerland, and this resulted in the home team’s elimination.

Bencic was part of Switzerland’s 2022 Billie Jean King Cup winning team and played a crucial role in the final as she defeated Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. Switzerland won the final 2-0 after Bencic’s win, as well as Jil Teichmann‘s victory over Storm Sanders.

Bencic was greatly disappointed after her latest defeat, which helped Noskova tie her head-to-head record over the former World No. 4 to 1-1. En route to the defeat, Benic also squandered match points.

I feel like s***. Of course, I think it’s well-deserved for the Czech players. They played amazing and in the end they for sure deserved it. Of course, it’s very disappointing, we don’t really have the words right now. This is sport, and it just really hurts

Belinda Bencic said at the press conference

After Bencic’s defeat, Viktorija Golubic registered a straight-set loss at the hands of Marie Bouzkova. Switzerland lost the tie 3-2.

I made her play. Sometimes, if you tell yourself, ‘I will go for it,’ and you miss, you wish that you would make her play. If you make her play and she makes a winner, you wish that you would have gone for it. So there’s no really right or wrong. I think if you are so close to winning – and we were both close – in the end, it’s like throwing a coin. [Czech Republic] absolutely deserved it; one of us had to win.

Belinda Bencic added

Bencic, however, clinched her first match against Bouzkova and also won the doubles match she played alongside Viktorija Golubic, defeating the pair of Tereza Valentova and Marketa Vondrousova.

Iva Jovic reveals she tried to emulate Jessica Pegula, Belinda Bencic, and Bianca Andreescu

Iva Jovic recently competed at the Charleston Open, where her run ended in the semifinals with a three-set defeat at the hands of eventual champion Jessica Pegula. Jovic has continued to impress the tennis world with her performance this season.

Earlier this year, she reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, losing in straight sets to eventual runner-up and four-time Grand Slam singles champion Aryna Sabalenka. Jovic has often expressed her admiration for Novak Djokovic. And after her first match in Charleston, Jovic revealed the names of the WTA players whom she has tried to emulate.

I think about players who have been extremely successful in this sport and what they have that I don’t have, so someone similar to you, but maybe you don’t have all those little fine tunes that they have. So I look at Belinda Bencic, I look at Jess Pegula, [Bianca] Andreescu as well. I might play her, I know. The tennis she was playing, even now, but when she won the US Open, was something that I look up to.

Iva Jovic said at the press conference

Jovic, the fourth seed, beat countrywoman Alycia Parks in the opening round of the Charleston Open. The 18-year-old has already played two tour-level finals. Last year, she lifted the WTA 500 Guadalajara Open with a straight-set victory over Emiliana Arango. In this year’s Hobart International, the American ace suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

Pegula, on the other hand, defended her crown in Charleston. She will not be playing at the Stuttgart Open.
