Carlos Alcaraz is his own boss now after his split with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, according to French tennis journalist Benoit Maylin. Because of the separation, uncertainty hangs over Alcaraz about how he will handle his tennis without Ferrero’s guidance this year.
Last December, the World No.1 announced on his social media that he ended his seven-year partnership with the former World No.1. Amidst discussions about possible reasons behind the split, Ferrero himself gave interviews during which he admitted that the failed contract negotiation was the reason why he couldn’t extend his collaboration with the six-time Grand Slam champion.
As Ferrero won’t be accompanying Alcaraz at the Australian Open, the tennis world is wondering how Alcaraz will perform in a tournament where he has yet to reach the semifinals. Maylin is also skeptical about the same.
There’s a big question mark over Alcaraz. We’ll see if he’s capable of breaking free. You can tell from the training videos lately that he’s the boss. He has his team around him, but he’s the one in charge. It wasn’t the same with Ferrero. Ferrero was the guy who developed him, who brought him to this level. Now, all of a sudden, we’re wondering how Alcaraz will perform this season.
Benoit Maylin said on the Sans Filet program on Winamax
Maylin pointed out that Jannik Sinner‘s coaching situation is stable. Darren Cahill last year said he would retire from coaching after the 2025 season, but Sinner didn’t want to part ways with him and, on several occasions, expressed his wish to continue working with the Aussie coach.
And that question doesn’t even arise with Sinner. Sinner’s situation is stable. We know that Darren Cahill ultimately stayed. Everything remains in place for him, and he can still improve. Alcaraz is fantastic, but I want to see how far he can take his tennis.
Benoit Maylin added
What surprised the tennis world most about the breakup was that it happened right after Alcaraz’s career’s most impressive season. The Murcia native clinched eight titles from 11 finals, including the French Open and the US Open, by defeating Sinner.
Whatever Alcaraz has achieved so far in his career, he has done so under Ferrero’s tutelage. He reached the No. 1 ranking and lifted 24 tour-level titles, including his six Majors. The 22-year-old also made it to the title clash of the ATP Finals last year, losing it to Sinner.
Lorenzo Sonego backs Jannik Sinner to achieve more than Carlos Alcaraz
Lorenzo Sonego has met both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner multiple times. Against the Spaniard, Sonego won and lost a match, but against his compatriot, he holds a 0-5 head-to-head record. Even Sonego believes Sinner is more consistent when compared to Alcaraz, whose level fluctuates sometimes, resulting in early-round exits.

I think both Jannik and Alcaraz will be the future of tennis, in addition to already being the present, and they will be the ones who will dominate for many years. Jannik gives the impression of being more consistent, and since we are very good friends, I hope he can continue to get stronger and be a step above Carlos.
Lorenzo Sonego told OA Sport
Sonego is in Hong Kong, competing in the ATP 250 event. The fifth seed went past Rei Sakamoto to schedule a round of 16 clash with Shang Juncheng.
Sinner and Alcaraz will start their 2026 campaigns at the Australian Open, which begins on January 18. But before that, the top two players will be featuring at an exhibition event in Incheon, South Korea.
