Whenever Marina Mabrey is on the basketball floor, fans can expect either top-tier shooting and some crashouts to go with it, as Betnijah Laney-Hamilton experienced in their game earlier.
The former has become her team’s most important player, the Toronto Tempo. Her scoring and leadership have been important for the expansion franchise as they battle through injuries.
This team was built to be a contender, but is three spots outside the postseason places. Usually, that means that the primary superstar has to lead by example so that the rest can help her win games.
The 29-year-old has been lighting it up in some games recently, one of which happened to help her tie the WNBA’s single-game scoring record.
But since then, the Tempo has lost three straight games. That usually places the pressure on their leading player, and that is exactly what head coach Sandy Brondello wanted out of her best player.
Against the New York Liberty, Marina Mabrey used her scoring touch to help her team take the lead. She fought and clawed her way into getting the upper hand, and one of them ended up with a whack to her face.
It was from Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, who invariably tried to free herself from Mabrey’s effort to take the ball away. The Liberty guard received a Flagrant 1 for that, but it set them up for something spicier later.

In the fourth quarter, the Tempo guard was speaking to her coach when a shoe flew in and hit her back. When she turned around, it was Laney-Hamilton, who was promptly assessed another technical and ejected.
Fans lose their minds watching shoe thrown at Marina Mabrey
When this clip reached social media, it instantly went viral. WNBA fans know that certain NSFW objects were thrown onto courts last season.
But for a player to throw a shoe and directly hit the very opponent they wrestled with a while back left fans stunned. They reacted with bewildered comments, examples of which are below.

She couldn’t wait until there was a stoppage to give JJ her shoe back? The throw was completely unnecessary 😭

A crash out would have been justified here.

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton is not one to harbor strong feelings towards opponents, unlike some other players in the league. Moreover, her New York Liberty were in the midst of a stunning comeback rally that should have seen them win the game.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton explains throwing the shoe at Marina Mabrey
After the shoe hit Marina Mabrey and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton was tossed from the game, the Liberty’s rally slowed down and eventually cost them the game.

I would never intentionally try to hit someone with a shoe, especially while they’re not looking. Teammate was without a shoe, so I did my best to try and get it to her. Unfortunately, it did hit someone.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton told the NY Post
The 32-year-old revealed to the Post that she was simply trying to toss the shoe over to Jonquel Jones. The Liberty center had lost her shoe in the earlier possession, but still ran over to the other end to defend.
The guard was tossing it over so that her teammate did not have to come out of the game. Instead, it landed on Mabrey, which the officials felt was unwarranted.
