Bill Belichick’s love-hate relationship with the New England Patriots reached a new low after he banned scouts of the NFL team from entering the University of North Carolina campus. The head coach of the Tar Heels football team doesn’t want his former side anywhere near his players.
There was massive hype surrounding Belichick’s first game in college football. Stars gathered to witness history being made at Chapel Hill. The joy lasted a little over an hour after kickoff as TCU humiliated UNC with a 48-14 scoreline.
Naturally, Belichick faced harsh criticism from all corners. However, his next move overshadowed the week one defeat. The veteran coach reportedly banned scouts from his former NFL team, the New England Patriots, from entering UNC premises.
This raised a lot of eyebrows. Everyone questioned the reason behind Bill’s secrecy. Belichick answered that question on Saturday (September 6), after UNC secured its first win of the campaign by defeating Charlotte on the road 20-3.
During the post-game press conference, reporters asked Belichick to elaborate on the ban.
It’s clear I’m not welcome there [at Patriots] at their facility. So they’re not welcome at ours.

This adds more fuel to the already lit fire between the Patriots and Belichick. Previously, the veteran coach dissed Robert Kraft, implying that there is no interference from the owner or the owner’s son at UNC.
Belichick subsequently banned scouts from the Patriots organization, essentially slamming the door on his previous employer. According to CBS News, 3 & Out’s John Middelkauf first reported the news on his channel, which was later confirmed in a report published by ESPN.
[UNC GM] Lombardi and Tar Heels pro liaison Frantzy Jourdain informed the Patriots that they would be banned from UNC the day before one of their scouts was scheduled to visit in August, a source with direct knowledge told ESPN.
While the Patriots’ scouts have been completely banned from the campus, movement of scouts from the remaining 31 NFL teams has also been restricted. They are limited to just three sessions of practice and cannot speak with the coaches, including Belichick.
The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov summed up the situation with an apt tweet.
This is the latest petty move by Bill Belichick—and in the big picture, it only hurts his players and future recruits.

Belichick’s animosity with the Patriots could come back to haunt his players at UNC. If the scouts aren’t allowed to evaluate the players, then they will be at a disadvantage when making the switch to the NFL.
UNC has sent several players to the NFL in the last few years. Among them are former Washington draftee and current Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Sam Howell, current Patriots starting quarterback Drake Maye, and the Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton, who made his league debut in a win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday.

TCU’s hammering may have soured the debut, but a resounding performance against Charlotte put UNC back on track for the ACC championship game. Belichick gave quarterback Gio Lopez another chance to show his skills as a shot caller.

Lopez was taken off after just 4 completions and 69 yards in his first appearance, but played the entire four quarters against Charlotte. He threw 17 completions from 25 attempts for 155 yards and 1 touchdown, aside from rushing 9 times for 44 yards.

UNC has a good chance of winning the next two games against Richmond and UCF to gain some momentum going into a four-game stretch in which they play Clemson, Cal, Virginia, and Syracuse.
