In April 2024, one of the most highly anticipated boxing matches took place at the Barclays Center in New York City. The fight was between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney for the WBC super lightweight title. However, the controversial events that unfolded during the match have continued to generate buzz. Recently, Devin’s father, Bill Haney, and Garcia’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, shared their insights on the situation.
De La Hoya recently appeared in an exclusive interview with Fight Hub TV. During the discussion, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions made light of Devin and his father for filing a battery lawsuit against Garcia. A few days later, Bill responded to De La Hoya’s comments regarding the lawsuit. As such, he even sent a powerful message to those watching the situation unfold.
Oscar’s running out of sh*t to say. He’s running out of things to do…. The promoter that can create all the narratives, and the spin doctor that he is. Of course, you want, you know battering a fighter is part of the game. But never is battering a fighter and using drugs. But you know what I mean, Oscar, he’s used drugs in the past, whether they’ve been recreational or any sort…. There’s no place for drugs in boxing.

For context, Garcia’s victory over Devin was declared a no contest after the Golden Boy boxer tested positive for banned substances. In the aftermath, Devin and his team expressed their dissatisfaction, accusing Garcia’s team of foul play in such a high-stakes match. As a result, they aimed to take significant action to teach ‘King Ry’ and his team a valuable lesson. Eventually, they decided to file a lawsuit against Garcia for battery.

Garcia and his promoter, De La Hoya, were particularly displeased with their rival’s camp. They found the idea of suing for battery due to being hit in a boxing match to be absurd. However, Bill Haney had a different perspective on the matter. He stated that he wouldn’t back down from the lawsuit, as he firmly believes in the importance of excluding drug use from boxing.
Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney rematch in bleak? Oscar De La Hoya seeks other competitors
After Ryan Garcia tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) following his fight against Devin Haney, he received a one-year suspension from the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC). This setback led the rising boxing superstar to engage in various controversial activities. Recently, however, he was scheduled to participate in an exhibition fight against Rukiya Anpo in Japan.

Recent reports indicate that the fight was postponed due to Garcia’s injury. As for his return to professional boxing, many have speculated about a potential rematch between King Ry and Haney. However, in a recent interview, Oscar De La Hoya appeared to dismiss that idea, stating that he believes Garcia already delivered a brutal defeat to Haney.
The way Ryan Garcia handled Devin Haney to me personally doesn’t call for a rematch… Once Ryan gets back in action and gets back in rhythm and has a tune-up fight possibly in late April or early May, then I want to throw him right in there with the very best, Teo Lopez or ‘Boots’ Ennis or whoever the very best is…

De La Hoya specifically mentioned Teofimo Lopez and Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis as two potential opponents for Garcia’s upcoming professional comeback. In a few months, King Ry’s suspension will come to an end. Given his status as one of the superstars in the boxing community, it will be intriguing to see who Garcia faces next.
