The Buffalo Bills are a mess. The Denver Broncos kicked them out of the playoffs last week. In the wake of the devastating loss, management fired their head coach, Sean McDermott, despite his relatively successful career with the AFC East team.

The Bills’ management has come under fire for the controversial decision. Sean McDermott had joined the Bills nine seasons ago and helped them to their first playoff in 18 long years in his inaugural season. Under his aegis, the Bills have managed eight playoff berths and five divisional championships.

It’s quite understandable how the fans are boiling over the decision to part ways with McDermott, especially since they decided to retain general manager Brandon Beane and promote him to the president of football operations at the same time.

The 49-year-old from Norwood, North Carolina, has faced media scrutiny over his decision to draft Keon Coleman in the past draft. Coleman, though, came with accolades and decorations, but failed to find his footing with the Bills. Furthermore, his behavior, such as missing team meetings, has been called out by fans.

In a recent press conference, Keon Coleman became a talking point. The Bills’ owner, Terry Pegula, interrupted a question to Beane about whether they have done enough to support QB Josh Allen with playmakers around him. Pegula pointed to Coleman and defended Beane while claiming that their decision stemmed from pressure from the coaching staff to draft the wide receiver.

Yeah, can I interrupt? I’ll address the Keon situation. The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon. I’m not saying Brandon wouldn’t have drafted him, but he wasn’t his next choice. That was Brandon being a team player and taking advice of his coaching staff, who felt strongly about the player.

It wasn’t the sole instance where Pegula spoke for Beane. This time, it was a shot at the officials. In a later segment, Pegula interrupted Beane when he was asked why the team fell short of a Super Bowl appearance despite having said that they had a championship roster at the trade deadline. The billionaire businessman shouted, “Bad Call,” pointing to the controversial overtime official’s decision during the divisional game.

In overtime, Josh Allen threw a deep pass to Brandin Cooks. While Cooks appeared to have initial control with both hands, Denver defensive back Ja’Quan McMillian stripped the ball as Cooks was going to the ground. Officials ruled that McMillian had possession, resulting in it being recorded as a game-losing interception.

The Bills could suffer from Pegula’s worst track record with head coaches in the post-Sean McDermott era

A decade ago, the Buffalo Bills were not seen as a respectable foe by any franchise. They never qualified for a playoff in the 21st century. It was a rookie head coach by the name Sean McDermott who turned the tables, leading them to eight playoff appearances in the last nine seasons.

As the Bills prepare for a transition from one of the most winningest coaches in their history, Pegula’s track record with head coaches comes into the limelight. Before McDermott, the Bills were far from being a solid team. From 2000 to 2017, the Bills had eight different head coaches, none of them, except Dick Jauron, serving for more than three seasons. Furthermore, all eight had a winning percentage below 0.500.

It’s not just about the Bills. It’s also about the Buffalo Sabres, the other major North American professional team owned by Terry Pegula. The Sabres haven’t qualified for a playoff in the past 14 seasons. Pegula have experimented with six different head coaches before bringing Lindy Ruff back last season. 2026 may finally be the year the Sabres make the playoffs, as they currently hold the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Sabres’ absence from the playoffs started two years before parting ways with Ruff. In his time from 1997 to 2013, Ruff helped the Sabres reach a Stanley Cup final, multiple playoff appearances. After firing him in 2013, the Sabres’ fortunes never rose until Ruff was brought back.

With McDermott gone and the coaching position being unattractive following Pegula’s mishandling of the firing, the Bills’ legacy and what will become of Josh Allen hangs in the balance.
