In the past few days, the Major League Baseball (MLB) has come into the spotlight for some controversial reasons. Amidst this, Los Angeles Dodgers’ star Blake Treinen recently revealed that he received a warning from the MLB for supporting Charlie Kirk.

In June, several MLB teams host the Pride Night celebration and stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. Recently, three San Francisco Giants pitchers, Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker, wrote Bible verses on their pride-themed hats.

Roupp wrote a reference to Genesis 9:12-16 on his cap. This led to a huge debate on social media, with several people coming in support of the players. Meanwhile, Sam Hentges opted against wearing a rainbow-themed cap and wore the regular cap of the Giants. The MLB would later issue a warning to the three of them.

The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations

MLB’s chief communications officer Pat Courtney told The Athletic

Blake Treinen opened up about the warning he received from the MLB last year. Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the Dodgers’ relief pitcher wore his hat in remembrance. The league later sent him a warning regarding this.

I got chastised by the league when I put Charlie [Kirk]’s name on my hat last year, because a man was murdered in cold blood. And now these gentlemen who are relievers in San Francisco are getting chastised by the league for putting a Bible verse on their hat. It’s crazy to me.

Blake Treinen told Bill Shaikin of Los Angeles Times

Treinen also did not wear a Pride-themed hat during the Pride Night celebration at Dodger Stadium. When he came out of the bullpen against the Los Angeles Angels, the veteran was seen sporting a normal Dodgers cap.

Among those who weighed in on this Pride Night controversy was United States Vice President JD Vance. In a tweet, he expressed that there was no need to send a warning to the players as Donald Trump had won the presidential elections.

Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore

Actor Rob Schneider also came in support of the players. While labeling MLB as “Anti-Christian“, the Hollywood star said that he will pay for the fines of any Christian player who wrote Bible verses on their hats.

I will pay the fines for any @MLB Christian player who wears a Bible verse on their uniform. @MLB is ANTI-CHRISTIAN

Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley wrote a letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. In the letter, the senator asked the top boss of the MLB why the San Francisco Giants player received warnings.

At the moment, the Texas Rangers are the only team in MLB that does not hold a Pride Night celebration. The team instead celebrates a Faith and Family Night featuring testimonies from players.

DOJ launches investigation into MLB’s handling of Giants Pride Night controversy

The Pride Night controversy that erupted after 3 San Francisco Giants stars wrote bible verses on their hats has a new major update. The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) have launched an investigation into MLB’s handling of the situation.

On Thursday, Assistant U.S. Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon wrote a letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and referred the league to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to investigate whether there was religious discrimination by the league.

As per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), it is against uniform policy for players to write on hats or modify uniforms in any way. The MLB does not usually publicly announce when they fine players regarding this.

In 2022, 5 Tampa Bay Rays stars refused to wear a rainbow-themed hat during the team’s annual Pride Night celebration while citing religious beliefs. Manfred later claimed that the league would not compel players to do so.

Earlier this week, this Pride Night controversy extended beyond the major league. An independent league team, York Revolution, forfeited a game after its players refused to wear Pride Night jerseys. It now remains to be seen if the DOJ will take any action against the league.
