The Wimbledon Championships will be wrapped up on Sunday (July 12). Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev have set up a blockbuster final after defeating Novak Djokovic and Arthur Fery, respectively. Sinner is bidding to defend his title, while the reigning French Open champion is bidding to win his career’s first title on grass.

One player made the final of the grass-court Major in the previous three seasons, winning in 2023 and 2024 by defeating Djokovic. It’s Carlos Alcaraz, obviously. But last year, Sinner dashed his three-peat dream. Alcaraz did not play at this Wimbledon. He, in fact, has not yet competed since April because during the Barcelona Open, he suffered from a wrist injury and hasn’t competed since then.

Alcaraz will also not be competing at the Canadian Open, the main draw of which starts on August 2. After it was confirmed that he wouldn’t be playing in Montreal, Alcaraz took to his social media and posted a clip of his training session, captioning it: “On the right path.”

Boris Becker was one among many who believe Alcaraz still has a long way to go when it comes to match fitness. He reacted to the clip of Alcaraz’s training session on X, writing: “Nice to see him hit a little but still far off I am afraid…“

Alcaraz has already played three finals this season. At the Australian Open, the 23-year-old defeated Djokovic in the final, becoming the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam.

Next, he beat Arthur Fils in the Qatar Open final. And although he failed to reach the finals of the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open, he reached the title clash of the Monte Carlo Masters, only to lose to Sinner, which saw him lose his No. 1 ranking to the four-time Grand Slam champion. Alcaraz dropped to the third spot in the live rankings after Zverev reached the Wimbledon final.

Greg Rusedski doesn’t think Carlos Alcaraz can play the US Open

Greg Rusedski also watched the video of Carlos Alcaraz‘s practice session. And like Boris Becker, the Brit is also convinced that Alcaraz is nowhere near match-ready. He said he would be shocked if Alcaraz recovers completely before the US Open.

I would be shocked if he is playing the US Open! Because what I noticed when I was watching the video footage, you know, he’s hitting some light forehands, some light backhands, barely hitting the ball, doing movement patterns. And when he was serving, did you realize that he didn’t hit one serve? He was doing the full motion and landing, letting the ball drop, and then restarting the motion.

Greg Rusedski said on the Off Court with Greg podcast

Alcaraz is the reigning champion in New York. Last year, he defeated Jannik Sinner in four sets in the final, winning his second title in the tournament after his 2022 win.

For me, to put a video out like that, I guess it gets you the publicity to say look, I’m working hard to try to get back. But it gives me more questions than answers, and it just tells me that there’s something a lot more serious if he’s not actually hitting the ball.

Greg Rusedski added

Because of the injury, the seven-time Grand Slam champion lost the chance to bid for a hat-trick at the French Open. Alexander Zverev, in Alcaraz’s absence and Novak Djokovic‘s and Sinner’s early exits, reached the final and beat Flavio Cobolli to end his Grand Slam title drought.
