Having clinched the 2023-24 NBA title, The Boston Celtics are not looking to settle down and aim to successfully defend it in the upcoming season. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla‘s tactics were recently revealed by his star player Jaylen Brown and they have been making rounds on the internet lately.

When inspiring his group or making his point, Mazzulla does things differently. He uses all kinds of non-basketball metaphors to get his point across to his players, from The Dark Knight to UFC bouts and soccer. Interestingly, Brown revealed something else in his recent appearance on the Hot Ones show.

Brown, the MVP of the 2024 NBA Finals, discussed the unconventional approach his head coach took in creating the Celtics’ strategy.

One of the things he’s coined is like, we call our offense the ‘killer whale offense,’ and we attack seals, cuz killer whales like how they hunt seals, and we study like how killer whales attack as a unit, and then we built our offense kind of like off of like killer whales.

Orcas are toothed whales and the largest members of the oceanic dolphin family. They are renowned for their remarkable hunting skills and intelligence. They attack in groups to accomplish their goals, be it sinking boats or taking out larger prey. The Celtics have several “killers” on the team, so Mazzulla perhaps urged them to attack like a pack on the court.

The Boston Celtics have been playing some exceptional basketball over the years in the NBA. Their game-play helped them win the 2023-24 NBA title. A lot of credit goes to the players and the Celtics head coach, Joe Mazzulla.

Mazzulla made sure to give the Celtics’ front office their flowers ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season. In a press conference, he praised the Celtics’ organizational structure for the team’s success.
