Boxer Imane Khelif won gold, ending a Paris Olympics 2024 string marked by scrutiny over a gender row. The Algerian boxer was subject to intense worldwide scrutiny over her gender due to misconceptions. However, that did not stop her from beating Yang Liu of China in a unanimous decision from all five judges, who scored the bout in her favor for all rounds.
The women’s 66 kg (welterweight) boxing event (July 26-August 11, 2024) kicked off at Roland Garros. Khelif beat Yang Liu 5-0 in the final of the women’s welterweight division, garnering her best run yet. She hasn’t scored in the negative for even one round at the Paris Olympics 2024! Last week, the Algerian native told SNTV videojournalist Tarek Boussaha, according to The Associated Press, that winning gold would be the best answer to the gender row. Now, Khelif, 25, is a gold medalist who has stuck to her resolve. She is now Algeria’s second gold medalist in boxing after Hocine Soltani in 1996. As such, her win has taken the internet by storm, but a few non-believers protested.

A young girl who began her journey at the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships but soon came under fire for hormonal imbalances. Now, Khelif’s tumultuous road to gold has paid off. Maintaining the IOC ad-hoc Boxing Unit rules, the body itself slammed the arbitrary sex tests put on her. In an exclusive with Sky News Boxing, even her father, Omar Khelif, provided documentation about her birth.
However, the web cancel culture jumped the gun on nitpicking the narrative. In remarks to the media scrum, Imane Khelif dedicated her victory to her country. The internet has taken to celebrating her Paris Olympics 2024 feat versus Yang Liu accordingly.
The four medalists — two bronze medals awarded – raised their arms together on the block as fans joined the 25-year-old in singing the Algerian anthem. Khelif kissed her gold in tears and pride. Khelif also told reporters that her supporters gave her strength despite the gender controversy.
Even Irish boxer Amy Broadhurst, who beat her in 2022, congratulated her. Shortly after, she wrote on her Instagram – “Very happy for this girl!! Weathered the storm and got what she deserved.” However, there are those like prime viral anti-trans group proponent Riley Gaines who again doubled down on her claims. All in all, this matter will remain etched in history for a hot minute or two.
