“The thing is, I have more experience in boxing” – Evander Holyfield addresses concerns about getting back into the ring ahead of Vitor Belfort fight
Evander Holyfield
Evander Holyfield will be stepping inside the boxing ring after more than 10 years when he takes on former MMA star Vitor Belfort at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida. ‘The Real Deal’ has a record of 44 wins, 10 losses and 2 draws in a glorious career that saw him dominate during the 90s. He was Mike Tyson’s toughest opponent and was also the victim in the notorious ear bite match.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Evander Holyfield addressed concerns of ring rust ahead of his fight against Vitor Belfort. While Holyfield did say that he had a good chance of struggling inside an MMA cage, he also stated that the case was different for boxing. Holyfield sound confident about getting the job done, come the 11th of September.
“I would have a problem if I was gonna do MMA” – Evander Holyfield
Holyfield was quoted as saying, “The thing is, I have more experience in boxing. The fact of the matter is I would have a problem if I was gonna do MMA, because that ain’t what I do. But I know I do boxing and I took care of myself real well. The fact is, I’m going in there with an MMA guy, and yeah, he does a couple of things right. He knows how to throw punches and he can deliver hard shots, but I can do more. I just bring more to the game because [of all] the years of doing it.
Holyfield continued, “Realistically, if you’re coming into boxing, you’re really coming into my field. I just want everyone to know that you have to be smart with what you want to do.” [via MMA Fighting]
Holyfield was expected to face Mike Tyson in a trilogy fight, a couple of months ago. But that fight never materialized. He was also expected to face Kevin McBride, which has been delayed. In the meantime, Vitor Belfort was scheduled to fight Oscar De La Hoya who recently went down with Coronavirus. And that’s how the chance fell to Holyfield.
The former heavyweight champion hasn’t fought since his TKO win over Brian Nielsen back in 2011. He will be looking forward to continuing where he left off, when he faces the dangerous Belfort who is making a return to the Boxing ring after 15 long years.
