“I won the first two”- Gennady Golovkin believes he beat Canelo Alvarez in their most recent two fights

Both Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have shared the boxing ring twice in the past and the overall results favour 1-0 towards Alvarez. The first encounter took place in 2017 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After twelve rounds, the bout ended in a draw and Golovkin retained his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight titles.

The second time the pair faced each other was later that year in the same arena. But this time the result was different and it wasn’t what Golovkin expected. The second fight was a bit different from the first one and Alvarez was being more aggressive than usual. Alvarez won the fight via the Majority decision and took the middleweight titles.

The result was a bit controversial and was disputed by many fight fans and pundits. Out of the 18 media outlets, ten decided in the favour of GGG and seven scored a draw.

GGG recently did an interview with ESPN reporter, Mike Coppinger where he discussed his opinions regarding Canelo Alvarez.

While speaking about his past encounters and his upcoming potential fight with Alvarez, ‘Triple G’ revealed that he was sure he was the winner in the first two fights. Gennady Golovkin explained that as he has beaten Alvarez twice already, it will not make significant changes if he wins the third one too. According to the boxer, despite the results, it will still be the same for him. “I thought I won the first two, so winning the third one would be the same to me. Nothing would change for me,” said GGG.

Whatever happened is now in the past and it’s hard to do anything about it. Even though fans would continue to argue about the results, that cannot be changed. But what fans should be looking forward to is the upcoming potential match-up between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin in 2022.

Alvarez is currently on the search for new opponents after he defeated Caleb Plant last year in November. His next match is scheduled to take place in May 2022 against Dmitry Bivol. After that, for Alvarez, the next fight will be the trilogy fight against Golovkin.
