Ryan Garcia is one of the most popular boxers in recent times and is on his way to becoming a PPV superstar. The undefeated boxer caught the eyes of the fans when he began his professional career in 2016. His fighting style and potential made him a huge prospect as he signed up with Oscar De La Hoya‘s Golden Boy Promotions in 2016.
In 2018, he collaborated with a legendary boxing coach, Eddy Reynoso, and trained under him at his facility in San Diego. During that time, Garcia got to meet the super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez. The two hit up immediately and the Mexican became a mentor figure for Garcia. However, things changed a lot when Garcia took a break from boxing in 2021 after suffering a broken wrist during his fight with Luke Campbell.
Later, Garcia developed a rift with Reynoso as the fighter mentioned that the trainer wasn’t giving him the appropriate attention. “I felt there was a lack of focus and lack of time (with Reynoso). So, I made the decision based on what I needed. Eddy is a great trainer, but you have to be there every day. It doesn’t matter how big you are or not.” said Garcia according to Marca.com. In 2022, Garcia changed his team and appointed Joe Goossen as his new trainer.
The verbal altercation that took place between Canelo Alvarez and Ryan Garcia
The beef between both the fighters started when during an interview with Complex Sports, Alvarez accused Garcia of being inconsistent with his training and not focusing enough to get to his full potential.
“Ryan has a lot of talent, but to me, in my eyes, he’s wasting a lot of time and wasting his talent,” said Alvarez. “I look at him and don’t see him 100 percent dedicated and, to us, that’s a bad signal. We always remind him as a team to come to the gym, to train, and to learn because you need to be in the gym…So definitely he needs to be a little more dedicated. ”
It didn’t go well with ‘KingRy‘ as he snapped back at Alvarez for making his comments public and not telling him in person. According to the boxer, he felt betrayed by Alvarez for such comments about him.
“I was shocked and kind of confused by it. Didn’t quite understand why he would say something like this, especially to the media, because he could have definitely taken me somewhere else and told me personally. I kind of took it as disloyal,” said Garcia.
However, Garcia still had respect for Alvarez and even invited him to the Garcia vs Javier Fortuna fight. As fans were expecting the beef to be settled, things took another turn when Garcia chose Gennady Golovkin over Canelo Alvarez in their fight. Similarly, Alvarez picked Gervonta Davis over Ryan Garcia in the upcoming fight.
