Yordenis Ugas and Manny Pacquiao
It looks like the end of a magnificent era. Manny Pacquiao all but confirmed that he would not be returning to the ring after his defeat to Yordenis Ugas on the 21st of August, at the T-Mobile Arena, in Paradise, Nevada. It was Errol Spence Jr. who would have actually fought the PacMan, had he not been injured.
Yordenis Ugas clearly dominated the largely experienced Manny Pacquiao to win the fight via. unanimous decision. Although, ‘The PacMan’ showed grit and courage, he was not able to see off the Cuban. Pacquiao, now 42, almost confirmed that he would be retiring from the sport of Boxing at the post-fight press conference. He expressed his desire to continue serving his people in the Philippines after this.
“I did my best tonight, but my best wasn’t good enough” – Manny Pacquiao
“I did my best tonight, but my best wasn’t good enough. No excuses. I’ve done a lot for Boxing, and Boxing has done a lot for me. I’ve done a lot for boxing and boxing has done a lot for me. I look forward to spending time with my family and thinking about my future in boxing. I am a fighter inside and outside the ring. And I look forward to getting back to the Philippines and serving the Filipino people as this pandemic continues to affect millions. In the future you may not see Manny Pacquiao again to fight in the ring. In my heart I want to continue fighting. But the thing is I have to consider also my body.” [h/t FirstSportz.com]
He then finished his speech by urging everyone to help the needy during these difficult times due to the pandemic, before finishing with the words – “Thank You Boxing.”
It has been a 26-year long, and successful career for Pacquiao. He made his debut on the 22nd of January, way back in 1995, when he was hardly 16 years old. He quickly rose through the ranks and made it out of Asia in six years’ time. He has held multiple titles during his career, and has notable wins over legends like Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton.
Pacquiao also famously fought Juan Manuel Marquez in a rare quadrilogy fight. Despite Pacquiao winning twice, and drawing once against Marquez, it was the Mexican who had the last laugh as he KOed Pacquiao in their quadrilogy fight. Pacquiao’s boxing record reads an impressive 62 wins, 8 losses and 2 draws. What a legend!
