Canelo Alvarez is one of the biggest names and a boxing veteran currently active in the sport of boxing. Furthermore, Alvarez has held titles in various weight divisions, including the WBA (Super), WBC, and Ring magazine super middleweight titles. Subsequently, he has also been a champion in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions in his career. Even though Alvarez has had a remarkable career, Teofimo Lopez has questioned the legitimacy of his professional boxing record.
In an interview on the Jaxxon Podcast with Quinton Jackson, Lopez spoke extensively about Canelo Alvarez. Lopez, who has had a lot of beef with Alvarez in the past, believes that Alvarez established his career in an illegitimate manner. Furthermore, Lopez spoke about how boxers go to Mexico to build their professional record and establish themselves properly. Subsequently, Lopez stated that Alvarez, who is also from Mexico, did the same before fighting in the USA. In addition, Lopez stated:
Half or ¾ of Canelo’s record is in Mexico. They build it there.
Alvarez currently has a professional boxing record of 62-2-2 with 39 KOs, 2 losses via decision, and 2 draws. Furthermore, Alvarez made his professional debut in 2005 in Mexico after having an amateur record of 44-2. In addition, Lopez stated that Alvarez fought in the US after having had 30 fights in Mexico with random fighters.
Subsequently, Lopez’s claim is not exactly true, but Alvarez had 22 bouts in Mexico before fighting in the US, after which he had a few more fights in Mexico. Hence, Alvarez has fought a total of 34 fights in Mexico out of the 64 fights on his record. This means that Lopez is right about Alvarez building half of his professional boxing record in Mexico.
Teofimo Lopez gives an update on his fight with Ryan Garcia
Lopez has other plans for his career and has expressed not being satisfied with his fighter’s purse. Further, Lopez and Ryan Garcia were having talks about fighting, but Lopez revealed that Garcia is not on his radar right now.
Both Lopez and Garcia are young and talented boxers who are expected to be at the top of their sport once they reach the peak of their physical powers. Hence, boxing fans have been eagerly awaiting the showdown between these two rising stars, but Lopez has different plans.
While attending the David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade event, Lopez did an interview with Boxing News Plus. Subsequently, Lopez revealed that he had received an offer but had declined it.
