After waiting patiently for Canelo Alvarez for several years, David Benavidez has decided to move on. As such, the WBC interim super-middleweight champion is moving up to the light-heavyweight division. The latest training camp videos showed a glimpse of the young phenom in action. Furthermore, the video is an intense sparring session where Benavidez unleashes a vicious series of combinations against Andre Dirrell.

Currently, Benavidez is set to make his light-heavyweight debut against Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The fight will happen on June 22 and will serve as a WBC light heavyweight title eliminator. In the meantime, ‘The Mexican Monster’ has not shied away from giving glimpses of his training routine, even though fighters prefer not to do this before a fight. As such, Benavidez showed his intense sparring with Dirrell on Instagram.

The sparring session was intense and almost felt like an actual fight since both boxers did not hold back. Benavidez punched with ferocity and accuracy, and he appeared quite dominant. However, Dirrell did not back down and kept up with Benavidez. The sparring also proved that Benavidez could hold his own against light-heavyweight boxers.

Dirrell complimented David Benavidez after the session. Dirrell stated that he was powerful, fast, and precise. In addition, ‘The Mexican Monster’ uploaded the clip with the intent of warning every other light heavyweight fighter about his impending arrival. Benavidez has excellent technique but his impact in the new division remains a question mark.

David Benavidez plans to do something Canelo Alvarez could never accomplish

Benavidez may have moved forward to the light-heavyweight division, but he has not forgotten his grudge. Along with the boxing world, Benavidez has repeatedly called out Canelo Alvarez for ducking the fight. Furthermore, even though their fight had not materialized, Benavidez now demanded respect from Alvarez.

For a long time, the ‘Mexican Monster’ has tried to cement his legacy by fighting and potentially defeating Alvarez. However, Canelo never entertained such a fight which made Benavidez feel that the Mexican boxing legend did not respect him.

In addition, Benavidez plans on fighting the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol after he defeats Gvozdyk. Beterbiev and Bivol are the boogeymen of the light heavyweight division. Canelo failed miserably against Bivol in 2022. As such, during an interview with the Fresh & Fit podcast, Benavidez stated he has big fights going on for him. If Benavidez can defeat either Beterbiev or Bivol, it will further impact his legacy and prove to people that Canelo actually ducked him.

Subsequently, Benavidez does not want to bow down to Alvarez just to get a fight against him. In addition, he remarked that Canelo Alvarez avoided him several times due to being scared. Hence, Benavidez would focus on conquering the light heavyweight division rather than chase the Canelo fight.

In case you missed it!
