Boxer, Jaime Munguia defeated John Ryder by TKO in the 9th round of the fight. The former managed to damage Ryder significantly and then took control of the fight. Subsequently, Munguia kept his guard on and began to lean in with his punches as Ryder made his way to the corner. In the end, the fight was stopped after Munguia continued his dominant performance. However, it appears that David Benavidez is not impressed by his performance.
Mungia was able to knock down Ryder four times across the fight, and the first knockdown happened in the second round. Later, Ryder went down again in the fourth and then again in the ninth, which caused his corner to step in. This was the second fight in Ryder’s 13-year career that ended with a stoppage. Furthermore, in his last fight, he lost via a unanimous decision after 12 rounds against Canelo Alvarez.
Subsequently, Benavidez reacted to Munguia’s victory by stating,
This is an easy knockout. That’s why they ducked me.
After his stellar performance against Caleb Plant in March 2023, Benavidez and his team were pursuing a fight with Munguia. The fight between the two Mexicans was finalized, but the latter backed down from the fight. As such, Mungia instead fought Sergiy Derevyanchenko followed by his tussle against Ryder.
Hence, after witnessing the Mungia vs. Ryder fight, Benavidez believes that Munguia avoided fighting him. Both Munguia and Benavidez have also expressed their intent to fight Alvarez in their recent post-fight interviews.
David Benavidez’s father claims Canelo Alvarez is scared
The demands for the Alvarez vs. Benavidez fight continue to spread like wildfire in the world of boxing. Alvarez has cemented his status as the undisputed middleweight champion after his dominant performance against Jermell Charlo. Similarly, Benavidez also took on Demetrius Andrade and emerged victorious, after which, the WBC made him a mandatory challenger to Alvarez’s titles.
However, Benavidez’s father, José Benavidez Sr., believes that Alvarez will do everything to avoid fighting his son. In an interview with FightHubTV, Benavidez Sr. stated that Alvarez doesn’t want anything to do with Benavidez and always comes up with excuses. Hence, he feels Alvarez and Benavidez might never happen.
Furthermore, Benavidez Sr. also brought up how Alvarez stated that he is the king and will do whatever he wants. However, the former suggested that Alvarez would have to do what the WBC wanted or would get stripped of his title.
